New River Gorge travel patch

New River Gorge gateway bases

Choose the gorge town that keeps the winding-road days short.

Fayetteville is the social and logistical center, Hico and Lansing hold much of the cabin inventory, and Hinton belongs to a different southern trip. Distance along the river is not drive time.

Base match

The right town depends on trailheads, outfitters, and how much quiet you want.

Fayetteville

Best for restaurants, coffee, climbing and rafting logistics, and quick access to Canyon Rim and the bridge corridor.

Lansing and Hico

Best for wooded cabins, hot tubs, groups, and easy access to north-gorge trails while staying outside town.

Oak Hill and Glen Jean

Best for value, groceries, and central access toward Thurmond and the middle gorge.

Hinton

Best for Sandstone Falls, the south gorge, rail history, and travelers who want the cabin weekend to move more slowly.

Trip geography

Think of the park as north, middle, and south gorge.

NorthFayetteville

Canyon Rim, bridge views, Endless Wall, and outfitters.

MiddleGlen Jean

Thurmond approaches, history, and central road access.

SouthHinton

Sandstone Falls, river town, and slower scenic days.

A single Fayetteville cabin can cover a three-night first trip. Add Hinton only when the south gorge is a main objective rather than one more attraction on a crowded list.

Before booking

The driveway and gear setup matter as much as the hot tub.

  • Is the final driveway paved, gravel, steep, or shaded in winter?
  • How many vehicles can park without blocking the road?
  • Is there covered space for wet rafting or hiking gear?
  • Which trailhead or outfitter does the owner consider truly close?
  • Does cell service work at the cabin, and is WiFi backed by a reliable connection?
