Quick take
Fayetteville serves the bridge and north gorge; Hinton serves Sandstone Falls and the south.
Most first trips should stay near Fayetteville, Lansing, or Hico for Canyon Rim, Endless Wall, Long Point, climbing, and rafting access. Oak Hill and Glen Jean are practical alternatives. Hinton is a distinct southern base for Sandstone Falls and a quieter river-town trip.
Gateway matchups
Which gorge base matches the activity that anchors the weekend?
Fayetteville
- Best all-around base for first visits, restaurants, outfitters, and the bridge corridor.
- Useful for Endless Wall, Long Point, Canyon Rim, and rafting departures.
- Expect busy fall weekends and event pricing around Bridge Day.
Lansing and Hico
- Best for wooded cabins, group stays, and quick access north of the bridge.
- A strong hot-tub and retreat market without giving up trail convenience.
- Confirm the final road, cell service, and winter treatment on steep driveways.
Oak Hill and Glen Jean
- Best practical value near the central gorge and Thurmond approach.
- Good for travelers mixing park days with groceries and regional services.
- The setting varies widely; inspect the exact neighborhood and road rather than the town name alone.
Hinton and the south gorge
- Best for Sandstone Falls, river history, and a quieter pace.
- Useful for an Amtrak-linked trip or a southern cabin weekend.
- Too far south for repeatedly treating Fayetteville trailheads as quick morning stops.
Current park planning notes
The park is long, steep, and slower than the route number suggests.
A park map is essential.
NPS describes New River Gorge as 53 miles long with many narrow, winding roads. GPS can route visitors to rough or unsuitable roads, so navigate to official visitor centers and signed access points.
Trailhead parking is small.
Popular trailheads such as Endless Wall and Long Point have limited lots and no medium- or large-RV parking. Early starts and a passenger vehicle are more useful than a cabin that merely advertises a short mileage.
Road construction changes river access.
Cunard Road repairs continue through 2027, with seasonal closures and one-lane delays. Check current road and trail closures before building a day around river-level access.
Trip planning
Three cabin weekends with different gorge priorities.
Fayetteville trail and river weekend
Use one north-gorge trail day, one Grandview or Sandstone day, and a final small history stop.
Rafting or climbing with recovery space
Book close to the outfitter, then judge the cabin on showers, gear drying, parking, and a real group meal.
Hinton and Sandstone Falls
Build around boardwalks, river views, Grandview, and cabin evenings instead of daily bridge-area drives.
