Base match
Choose a port by island arrival point, not mileage alone.
Houghton, Michigan
Best for the NPS Ranger III to Rock Harbor or a Michigan seaplane plan.
Tradeoff: The Ranger III crossing is a long travel day. Confirm transport dates and whether a mainland overnight is needed on both sides of the island visit.
Copper Harbor, Michigan
Best for the Queen IV's Rock Harbor arrival and a Keweenaw Peninsula trip.
Tradeoff: This is a smaller town at the peninsula tip. Check boat check-in, weather cancellation, and the extra drive beyond Houghton.
Grand Portage, Minnesota
Best for Windigo access on the Sea Hunter III or Voyageur II.
Tradeoff: The boat choice matters: some trips are brief day visits and others continue around the island. Confirm the exact arrival and return ports before reserving cabins.
Trip logic
The ferry is the itinerary's fixed point.
NPS lists public travel by ferry and seaplane, with no vehicle carriage to Isle Royale. The island is closed to visitors from November 1 through April 15, and scheduled public service generally operates from mid-May into September. Choose Rock Harbor or Windigo first, then the boat and mainland port. A day-trip ferry provides only a short island window; an overnight wilderness trip needs separate lodging or campground arrangements on the island.
Before booking
Check the boat, gear, and overnight before mainland lodging.
- Does the ticket arrive at Rock Harbor or Windigo?
- Will the return depart from the same port?
- Where will the vehicle remain on the mainland?
- Can the mainland cabin booking absorb a weather-delayed return?
