Everglades and Biscayne gateway decision

South Florida's park entrances do not share one road.

Homestead and Florida City are unusually useful because they can support the Everglades main entrance and Biscayne's Convoy Point visitor center. Miami favors Shark Valley and a city-led trip. Everglades City serves the Gulf Coast and Ten Thousand Islands. Choose the specific entrance or boat departure before comparing stays.

Base match

Decide between a mainland entrance and a boat day.

Homestead and Florida City

Best for Royal Palm, the road to Flamingo, and Biscayne's mainland visitor center.

Tradeoff: Biscayne is mostly water: seeing islands or reefs requires a boat or other water plan. Flamingo is still 38 miles beyond the Everglades main entrance.

Miami

Best for a city stay with a Shark Valley day or an organized Biscayne water trip.

Tradeoff: Shark Valley does not connect to the Everglades main park road. A Miami address can also be inconvenient for an early Flamingo departure.

Everglades City

Best for the Gulf Coast, Ten Thousand Islands, and paddling or boat trips.

Tradeoff: This is a separate western entrance, not a short loop to Royal Palm or Flamingo. Match any tour to the exact launch point.

Trip logic

Three Everglades entrances do not connect inside the park.

NPS identifies three Everglades entrance areas that do not connect within the park; its main road begins near Homestead, Shark Valley is on the Miami side, and Gulf Coast is at Everglades City. Biscayne's Dante Fascell Visitor Center is at Convoy Point in Homestead, yet the park's water experience depends on a booked boat or personal craft. For two-park trips, give each park its own day and check weather, water conditions, and transport details.

Before booking

Book the water plan before the room.

  • Which Everglades entrance is on the itinerary?
  • Is the Biscayne plan only the shore visitor center, or an actual boat day?
  • Where does the booked tour depart, and when must guests arrive?
  • Will the lodging's kitchen and gear storage support wet clothes, food, and early starts?
