Route at a glance
Two northern nights, then two southern nights.
This route uses ordinary scenic roads only when current conditions and the vehicle make them appropriate. Fern Canyon and Tall Trees require separate reservations, and weather can make unpaved access a poor choice even when a permit is in hand.
Arrive with tomorrow's road choice settled
Buy groceries and check in before dark if the cabin is near Hiouchi or the Smith River. Ask locally about Howland Hill Road conditions and choose a paved alternative if the vehicle or weather does not fit.
- ArrivalFood, fuel, offline maps, and rain layers.
- EveningSet boots and jackets where they can dry after tomorrow.
Give Jedediah Smith one unhurried day
Use a current map to combine one old-growth walk with the Smith River or a scenic drive suited to the vehicle. Do not spend the day chasing every named grove south along US 101; return to the same cabin for a second northern night.
- MorningMain grove walk while the trail is quiet.
- MiddayRiver or picnic stop.
- AfternoonCrescent City coast or cabin reset.
Use the parkway as the bridge between cabins
Check out and move toward Prairie Creek. Stop along Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway and choose one short forest walk. If staying in Trinidad, buy dinner supplies before checking in; if staying in Orick, confirm the limited evening options in advance.
- MorningSouthbound US 101 with one planned scenic stop.
- MiddayPrairie Creek area lunch and walk.
- AfternoonCabin check-in near Orick or Trinidad.
Use Fern Canyon or Tall Trees only with the right access plan
If a Fern Canyon vehicle reservation is secured and Davison Road suits the vehicle, use it as the main objective and pair it with Gold Bluffs Beach. If not, choose Prairie Creek trails and coastal stops that do not require forcing the road. Tall Trees is a separate reserved trailhead and should not be stacked casually onto the same day.
- EarlyDepart for the permitted or selected trailhead.
- MiddayMain walk and packed lunch.
- AfternoonCoast, Trinidad meal, or cabin drying time.
Let the final cabin determine the coast stop
From Trinidad, use a nearby beach or harbor walk before continuing south. From Orick, stop at the Kuchel Visitor Center or one short trail that lies directly on US 101.
Before leaving home
Decisions that can derail the route.
- Reserve Fern Canyon vehicle access for May 15 through September 15 if needed.
- Reserve Tall Trees separately if it is central to the trip.
- Read current road and trail conditions before every unpaved-road plan.
- Download the official map and ignore GPS shortcuts onto unsigned roads.
- Confirm late food and check-in options near Orick or Klamath.
