Route at a glance
What this itinerary assumes.
This is a summer route for travelers willing to change cabins once. In 2026, Glacier does not require vehicle reservations, but Logan Pass has a three-hour private-vehicle parking limit from July 1 through September 7 and a separate ticketed shuttle option. Conditions can change quickly; build the route around what is actually open.

Day-by-day route
The usable version of the trip.
Stock up in Columbia Falls or Whitefish
Buy two breakfasts, two trail lunches, and a transfer-day dinner before reaching the cabin. Fuel the car, download maps, and decide whether Day 2 is an Avalanche-area morning or a Lake McDonald day. These are not interchangeable once parking fills.
- ArrivalGroceries and fuel before West Glacier.
- EveningCheck trail, road, smoke, and shuttle notices; pack lunch and rain layers.
Choose Avalanche country or Lake McDonald
For Trail of the Cedars and Avalanche Lake, drive early: those trailheads are not served by the park shuttle in 2026. A lower-effort group can use Apgar, Lake McDonald viewpoints, and a shorter forest walk instead. Return to the same cabin before the transfer day.
- EarlyReach the chosen trailhead with breakfast already handled.
- MiddayEat the packed lunch; in-park food lines should not control the route.
- Late afternoonLake time or cabin recovery, not another cross-park drive.
Cross Going-to-the-Sun Road without collecting every stop
Check out early and move east. Pick two or three stops based on open parking and weather. If Logan Pass is central to the day, use the ticketed shuttle for a longer visit or obey the three-hour private-parking limit and display the required timestamped permit. Continue to the St. Mary side and check in before dinner.
- MorningWest entrance to the alpine corridor, with pullouts chosen in advance.
- MiddayLogan Pass or one nearby trail, not both plus a long waterfall hike.
- AfternoonSt. Mary corridor and east-side cabin check-in.
Let current access choose the valley
Check the official conditions page before committing to Many Glacier, St. Mary, or Two Medicine. Choose one valley and one primary walk. The east side rewards a full day; it does not reward spending half of it changing plans at closed roads.
- MorningDrive directly to the chosen valley.
- MiddayMain walk and packed lunch.
- AfternoonOne lake or roadside stop, then back to the cabin.
Leave from the side that matches the next trip leg
Book flights and onward lodging with the final cabin location in mind. A westbound departure from an east-side cabin requires real road time; do not disguise it as a quick scenic morning.
Before leaving home
Decisions that can derail the route.
- Read the current conditions page the evening before every major drive.
- Choose private car or ticketed Logan Pass shuttle before the transfer day.
- Confirm check-in timing and food options near the east-side cabin.
- Carry lunch, water, layers, and enough fuel for slow traffic and detours.
Cabin brief
Book the stay that makes these days easier.
Two clean bases
A simple cabin in the right valley beats one impressive stay with repeated three-hour drives.
Transfer-friendly
Easy parking, light checkout chores, and clear check-in instructions matter on Night 3.
Food planning
The east-side kitchen should support dinner when services close early or are limited.
Weather refuge
Heat, comfortable seating, and room for wet gear make a closed-road afternoon recoverable.
Planning sources
