Yosemite cabin guide

Where to stay near Yosemite if you want cabin space without guessing on drive times.

Yosemite cabin planning is mostly geography. The right base depends on whether you care most about Yosemite Valley, the south entrance, giant sequoias, Tioga Road, Bass Lake, or a quieter town outside the crush of peak-season traffic.

Quick take

Yosemite cabin bases are all tradeoffs.

Oakhurst and Fish Camp work well for the south side. Mariposa is a practical all-around town. Groveland fits the Big Oak Flat approach. Bass Lake is best when the cabin-and-water time matters. Wawona is useful when inside-park proximity matters and availability works.

Best south-side base Oakhurst or Fish Camp for services and south entrance access.
Best all-around town Mariposa for practical lodging and year-round services.
Best cabin vacation feel Bass Lake when water, family time, and evenings matter.

Gateway matchups

Which Yosemite base fits your trip?

Oakhurst / Fish Camp

  • Best for south entrance access, services, and family logistics.
  • Good for Mariposa Grove and cabin availability.
  • Expect peak-season traffic and longer days to some park areas.

Mariposa

  • Best for practical lodging, restaurants, groceries, and year-round town services.
  • Good for travelers who want a real town outside the park.
  • Expect a real drive into Yosemite Valley.

Groveland

  • Best for the Big Oak Flat approach and trips that also look north or west.
  • Good for travelers avoiding the south-side lodging cluster.
  • Confirm road status and construction before committing.

Bass Lake / Wawona

  • Best for cabin-focused family trips and south-side park access.
  • Bass Lake adds water and vacation time outside the park.
  • Wawona can be convenient, but inventory and pricing can be limiting.

Current park planning notes

Yosemite rewards early arrivals and flexible cabin days.

No 2026 entry reservation listed.

NPS says a reservation is not required to enter Yosemite in 2026, though the entrance fee still applies.

Peak traffic is real.

NPS recommends arriving before 9 a.m. or after 5 p.m. from spring through fall to avoid delays and congestion.

Plan for limited cell service.

NPS advises downloading offline content in the NPS app and preparing to disconnect because cell service is limited in the park.

Trip planning

Three Yosemite cabin plans that respect the drive.

First Yosemite trip

Valley-focused base

Pick the town that makes the drive acceptable, leave early, and keep the evening simple at the cabin.

South-side family trip

Oakhurst, Fish Camp, or Bass Lake

Pair Yosemite days with cabin meals, lake time, and a lighter schedule that does not rely on daily Valley drives.

Longer stay

Rotate park days and recovery days

Use a cabin to avoid forcing every day into Yosemite Valley traffic. Alternate big park starts with slow mornings.
