The short answer
Ashford is the safer first-trip choice. Packwood is the stronger southeast-side cabin trip.
Choose Ashford when Paradise is nonnegotiable, when the trip is in winter, or when minimizing route uncertainty matters. Choose Packwood when the cabin itself matters, the open southeast trailheads fit the group, and current conditions support Stevens Canyon access. Do not treat the two towns as interchangeable points around a circular park road.
2026 conditions
Packwood remains useful, but two familiar east-side anchors are unavailable.
Ohanapecosh developed area is closed through the 2026 season.
The campground, visitor center, restrooms, picnic area, parking, and trailhead access within the construction zone are closed. Some east-side trail access remains elsewhere, but the trip cannot depend on Ohanapecosh services.
Sunrise and White River are closed until further notice.
Active fire has closed both roads and associated trailheads. This does not make Packwood the Sunrise workaround; it removes the northeast corridor from the itinerary.
Stevens Canyon Road remains open in the latest fire update.
That preserves a seasonal southeast-to-Paradise connection, though specific trails and nearby areas may be closed. Recheck road and fire pages immediately before driving.
Side by side
Two different entrances create two different trips.
| Decision | Ashford | Packwood |
|---|---|---|
| Primary entrance | Nisqually / SR 706 | SR 123 / Stevens Canyon side |
| Best park areas | Longmire, Paradise, southwest corridor | Open southeast forest, Box Canyon, seasonal Stevens Canyon |
| Winter fit | Only practical vehicle side for Paradise access | Park east-side roads are seasonal or closed |
| Cabin rhythm | Trail-first mornings near the gate | Roomier forest stay and slower evenings |
| Main risk | Entrance queues and limited groceries | Building the trip around a closed facility or road |
Season fit
The calendar can decide before the cabin does.
Winter
Use Ashford. NPS says winter vehicle access is through Nisqually, and all vehicles must carry chains. The Longmire-to-Paradise road can close nightly or for weather.
Early summer
Ashford is usually easier to plan while high roads are still emerging from snow. Packwood needs a current check for SR 123 and Stevens Canyon access.
High summer
Either can work in a normal season. In 2026, current closures favor a Paradise-led Ashford plan or a deliberately southeast Packwood plan—not a grand loop.
Fall
Shortening daylight and first snow make through-road assumptions fragile. Choose the entrance attached to the primary objective and keep a lower-elevation backup.
Should you split the stay?
Move only if the second cabin creates a genuinely different park chapter.
For four nights, two in Ashford and two in Packwood can work when Stevens Canyon is open and the group wants both Paradise and southeast forest days. Make the transfer itself a park day, using only open viewpoints and trails. A split is not worthwhile when fire, construction, or snow has removed the east-side objectives; in that case, one stable Ashford base avoids packing chores without sacrificing access.
Before committing to two rentals, compare the cancellation windows and confirm that the transfer route is expected to be open for the actual dates.
